I recently moved into a new home, far away from all the homes I’ve ever lived, a truly terrifying yet exhilarating endeavor.

This home has a kiwi tree that winds and wraps around the house and along the trellis above, protecting and instilling peace into this home as it hovers over me like a giant. I saw a picture of this tree long before I moved. Whenever I was struggling where I was at, I imagined this tree welcoming and holding me. Now that I’m here and living under its canopy, daily I’m grateful to experience that warmth and acceptance I dreamt of for so long.

Trees don’t judge.
They don’t assume,
they don’t ask you
to be different.

They don’t tell you
you’re too much
or not enough.

They welcome
and protect you
whoever you are,
however you are.

This piece is a love poem to all the trees that have changed us by not asking us to change.
